There’s a reason breast augmentation is one of the most-requested cosmetic surgery procedures. Most women are very pleased with the results, which are often life-enhancing. Before undergoing breast augmentation, it is important to carefully consider why you want the procedure performed and find out whether you are a candidate. Our triple board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. David Bray, Jr., explains what to consider before undergoing breast augmentation.
1. Realistic Expectations
Breast augmentation can change your life in many positive ways. However, it’s crucial that you have realistic expectations about the outcome. Breast implants will increase the volume of the breasts, but implants cannot lift the breast tissue or change the nipple position. In addition, implant size may be influenced by your measurements and anatomy.
2. Implant Types
Breast implants come in two basic types: saline and silicone. Decide which type of breast implants best suits you. Saline implants, filled with sterile saltwater, are FDA-approved for women aged 18 and up. Should the implant rupture, the body absorbs the saline.
Only those aged 22 and up may receive silicone gel implants. These breast implants may look and feel more natural than their saline counterparts. Should the silicone implant rupture, the gel may be contained within the implant capsule, but in some cases, the gel moves outside the capsule. Imaging studies, such as MRI, are recommended after breast augmentation with silicone implants to help identify ruptured implants.
3. Breast Implant Candidates
Not everyone is a candidate for breast implants. If you are currently not a candidate, you may become one after making certain lifestyle changes. For instance, if you’re a smoker, quit. You’ve probably heard that advice before, but it’s critical if you want breast implants. Smoking impairs healing.
Also, cut back on alcohol consumption. If you’re sick or dealing with an infection, you must wait until the doctor okays the surgery.
Pregnant or nursing women are not breast implant candidates, but that’s not the case after childbirth and weaning. Women with breast cancer or abnormal mammograms are also not breast implant candidates unless the implants are part of reconstructive surgery after mastectomy.
