The face is often the first area to show signs of aging. Forehead lines, wrinkles and sagging eyelids and brows can settle in, giving others the impression that you are tired, sad or angry. The hooded effect caused by sagging skin tissue can even impact your vision. Facial procedures such as brow lift and eyelid lift can improve these signs of aging, but which one is right for you?
Dr. David Bray Jr. is a triple board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in facial surgery. He will listen to your concerns and examine your eyelids and brows to help you determine whether one or both options will work best for you.
What is a Brow Lift?
Brow or forehead lift elevates the position of the brow and reduces lines and wrinkles in the forehead. This option is suitable for people with a hooded brow appearance who often raise their eyebrows to see and avoid looking unhappy or sleepy. Women with a hooded brow may have issues with their sagging brow overshadowing their eye makeup.
There are nonsurgical options such as BOTOX® and dermal fillers that can improve the appearance of a sagging brow, and several types of surgical methods that can be performed to elevate the brow.
What is an Eyelid Lift?
An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is often done for those who look tired because of sagging eyelids or puffy bags under the eyes. Upper eyelid surgery removes excess skin. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty addresses under-eye bags by removing and repositioning fat and skin.
The traditional upper eyelid lift removes excess skin and sometimes fat. Significant sagging may require ptosis surgery to shorten the levator muscle and lift the eyelid further.
Which One is Right for You?
The right procedure for you depends on your concerns. A low brow position with excess skin and lines of the forehead may be best addressed with a brow lift, whereas sagging upper eyelid skin is better suited for an eyelid lift. In some cases, you may achieve the best results with a combination of both procedures for an overall rejuvenated look.
