Fat transfer surgery, also known as fat grafting, involves transferring fat from one part of your body to another. The results of fat transfer can last for years, however, not all fat that is transferred will survive. Our triple board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. David Bray, Jr., explains how fat transfer surgery works for facial and body contouring.
Fat Transfer Surgery
Fat is harvested from another part of your body through liposuction. For most people, that means removing some extra fat from the abdomen, hips, or thighs. The incisions are very small.
This fat is then prepared for fat transfer. The harvested, purified fat is injected into the area chosen for contouring.
Fat Transfer Surgery and Facial Contouring
Faces lose volume as we age. That can lead to a gaunt and aged appearance. Loss of volume is common in the:
• Cheeks
• Temples
• Hollows of the eyes
• Lips
• Nasolabial folds
• Undereye area
Fat transfer is an alternative therapy for many of the facial areas treatable with dermal fillers.
Fat Transfer Surgery and Body Shaping
Fat transfer brings volume to parts of your body where you want additional volume. At the same time, the harvested fat comes from an area where you desire some reduction. If you have depressed scars anywhere on your body, fat transfer can fill in those depressions.
Fat Transfer Surgery Recovery and Results
Expect to take several days off work after undergoing fat grafting. You may experience temporary swelling and bruising.
The results of fat transfer surgery aren’t instantaneous. Expect to wait at least six months to witness the final result.
