There is no shortage of surgeries designed to turn back the clock and make you look younger. One of the most effective is blepharoplasty. Our triple-board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. David Bray, Jr., explains why this procedure does such a good job of making patients look refreshed and youthful.
Why Eyelid Skin Sags
Aging and the loss of skin elasticity results in drooping skin around the eyes. That extra skin gives people an aged and tired look. In addition, orbital fat may start to protrude during the aging process, resulting in the appearance of lower eyelid bags.
Eyelid Surgery
Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelid or the lower eyelid. Often, the procedure is performed on both. While upper eyelid surgery eradicates excess skin, lower eyelid surgery gets rid of unsightly bags and excess skin.
Eyelid Surgery Procedure
Blepharoplasty is performed under either local or general anesthesia. It’s an outpatient procedure, and you will need a ride home and help with standard care for the first 24 hours. On the upper eyelid, the surgeon removes excess skin. Stitches are used to close the incision.
On the lower eyelids, an incision is created on the inside of the eyelid to remove fat from the baggy area. The fat is then repositioned or removed. Excess skin can also be removed from the lower eyelid. In most cases, the lower eyelid is supported with a canthopexy.
Eyelid Surgery Results
Expect some noticeable swelling and bruising for a couple of weeks as the eyelids heal. After several weeks, improvements of the bags and drooping eyelid skin may be noticeable and may result in a more alert and bright-eyed look.
