Plastic surgery is performed to improve or correct a patient’s form or function. The word “plastic” derives from the Greek plastikos meaning to mold or to shape; its use here is not connected with the material known as plastic. Plastic surgery requires many years of hospital-based surgical training. After extensive training a surgeon may be eligible for board certification. Dr. Bray, Jr. is certified by three prestigious boards. The following requirements were met by Dr. Bray, Jr. in order to become triple board certified.
TheAmerican Board of Plastic Surgery certifies surgeons in plastic surgery including and reconstructive procedures of the face, head and neck, trunk, and extremities. Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in plastic surgery is required. The requirements for certification include:
- Graduate from an accredited medical school
- Hold a license to practice medicine in the state where residing
- Complete training in plastic surgery in an ACGME-accredited plastic surgery residency program
- Continue in the practice of plastic surgery for a minimum of nine months, during which time all operative reports are submitted and approved by a panel of board-certified plastic surgeons
- Successfully pass a comprehensive written and oral examination
The American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery certifies surgeons in face, head, and neck plastic surgical procedures, especially procedures such as facelift and rhinoplasty. The requirements for the ABFPRS include:
- Graduate from an accredited medical school
- Hold a license to practice medicine in the state where residing
- Complete an ACGME-accredited residency program in otolaryngology or plastic surgery
- Already be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the American Board of Otolaryngology or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for otolaryngology or plastic surgery
- Continue in practice for two years
- Submit and receive approval of 100 facial plastic surgery operative reports by a panel of board members
- Successfully pass a comprehensive written and oral examination
The American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery certifies surgeons in head and neck surgery, otology, pediatric otolaryngology, and facial plastic surgery. Requirements for the American Board of Otolaryngology include:
- Graduate from an accredited medical school
- Hold a license to practice medicine in the state where residing
- Complete at least one year of training in general surgery in an ACGME-accredited residency program
- Complete a minimum of four years of training in otolaryngology in an ACGME-accredited residency program
- Successfully pass a comprehensive written and oral examination
